Garlic Helps Reduce Risk of Heart Disease - A Lot!
Here’s a excerpt from Bottoms Line’s Daily Health News email newsletter: "A study at UCLA Medical Center in California affirms that cooking like Emeril -- with loads of garlic -- is good for you. Bam! Their research demonstrates that garlic can prevent or slow the progression of heart disease by reducing plaque formation in the coronary arteries.
"To learn all the details of the study, I contacted lead researcher Matthew Budoff, MD, who told me that while he and his colleagues had expected a positive cardiovascular impact from garlic, they were surprised at how much difference it really made. In the double blind, randomized clinical study, Dr. Budoff and his team gave 19 heart patients either aged garlic extract (AGE, an odorless capsule) or a placebo. All were already taking statin drugs to lower cholesterol. The brand of AGE used was Kyolic, and the dosage was 1,200 mg daily.
"After one year, researchers found that...
"• Those taking garlic showed a substantial drop in the progression of coronary plaque formation -- 66% less than the placebo group. Plaque is a major contributor to clogged arteries and heart disease.
"• Another benefit -- lower homocysteine. Elevated levels of this inflammatory amino acid are a significant risk factor for heart attacks.
"Note: Because garlic has blood-thinning properties, it should not be taken with drugs that thin the blood (such as aspirin or warfarin), or before undergoing surgery.
"Dr. Budoff believes that AGE is a beneficial supplement that should be considered for those who have existing heart disease or those at high cardiovascular risk (for example, if you have high blood pressure or a family history of heart disease). Other research demonstrates that people who simply incorporate more garlic into their diets have lower rates of heart disease.
"As usual, there‘s no free pass, and no one remedy can do it all. Dr. Budoff emphasizes that the baseline treatment for heart disease -- before any drugs or supplements -- lies in positive lifestyle adjustments such as a healthful diet (loaded with garlic) and regular exercise. This study reinforces one of Daily Health News contributing editor Andrew L. Rubman‘s favorite phrases: ‘A clove a day keeps the cardiologist away...
